For nearly a century, the German Language School at Zion Church has been helping students of all ages and backgrounds develop German language skills while exploring the rich traditions and culture of the German-speaking world. Founded in 1929, our school is one of the longest-running German language programs in the Baltimore area.
We welcome children, teens, and adults, from complete beginners to advanced speakers. Our experienced instructors create a supportive, engaging learning environment where students gain confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing German while building lasting friendships.
Children’s German Program
Our children’s program uses flexible proficiency-based learning groups rather than fixed age-based classes. Placement is determined by each student’s German language background, proficiency, prior exposure, individual learning needs, and teacher observation. During the first few weeks of the school year, teachers may adjust placements to ensure every child is in the most appropriate learning environment.
Children’s classes may include:
- Conversation and listening comprehension
- Reading and writing
- Songs, games, and stories
- Vocabulary and grammar
- German culture and traditions
- Creative projects, performances, and hands-on activities
Adult German Classes
Whether you’re learning German for travel, family heritage, work, or personal enrichment, we offer classes for every level:
- Beginner – No prior knowledge required
- Intermediate – Build confidence in conversation, reading, and everyday communication
- Upper Intermediate – Expand vocabulary, improve fluency, and strengthen grammar
- Advanced – Refine conversation, literature, and advanced language skills
- Conversation Group – Practice speaking in a relaxed, supportive setting
Flexible Learning Options
- Saturday In-Person Classes: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Wednesday Evening Online Class: 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. via Zoom (ideal for beginners or those unable to attend Saturdays)
