Vergebung hat immer zwei Dimensionen: Sie geschieht zwischen Gott und Menschen, wie auch zwischen Menschen. Dabei ist Gottes Vergebung Vorbild und Richtschnur. Weil seine Güte unendlich ist, sollen wir siebzigmal siebenmal vergeben. Von Herzen sollen wir vergeben. Andere zu richten scheint uns von Natur aus gegeben zu sein, Vergebung müssen wir erst lernen. Doch wenn wir es wagen, kann unsere Geschichte überraschende Wendungen nehmen, wie einst bei Josef.

When God changes God’s mind about punishing Nineveh for their evil ways, Jonah is angry. Yet God is gracious and merciful, abounding in steadfast love. In baptism we receive the grace of God that is freely given to all. As Martin Luther wrote, in the presence of God’s mercy we are all beggars.
