Hubertusmesse, as it is known in Germany, is a special feast day celebrated to bless the hunt and hunters. Legend has it Hubertus, an avid hunter born in the seventh century, encounters the wondrous image of a splendid albino stag carrying a shining cross between its antlers. Through this vision, Hubert is moved to transform his life, giving up wealth and privilege in service to the church. St. Hubertus has been the patron saint of hunters, as well as animal protectionists, being responsible for the care of animals, both domestic and wild.
